Looking at my map, Port Stephens looks a bit like a dog's head as it juts out from the coast, just north of Newcastle. If you can follow that logic, then Soldiers Point is one of its ears and at the tip of the ear is one of Port Stephens' best located tourist parks. Unlike the other tourist parks at Port Stephens, this one has views. Straddling the headland, accommodation at the has some of the best vistas Port Stephens has to offer.

Like all good parks, there's a range of accommodation catering for a range of budgets. At the top of the range are the Waterview and Sunset Villas . My partner and I had booked in to the Waterview Villa but after checking out the view from the Sunset Villas, we had a change of mind and pleaded our case to the sympathetic and understanding reception staff. Thankfully one was free and we made the big move.

Despite the minuses of the Sunset Villa, such as not having a second TV, dishwasher, and being smaller in size compared to the Waterview Villas, the views are superior. The Sunset Villa has two good sized en-suite queen bedrooms. There is a full kitchen and two two-seat sofas, flat screen TV, DVD player and CD/Radio. Each bedroom also has a clock radio. There is a large deck with tables and chairs and a huge BBQ to cook on while enjoying the magnificent scenic sunsets from the balcony.

Campers are not second class citizens here. Their grassed area is between the Sunset Villas and the water and enjoys the same views. The amenities block is right next door. There is a large pool inside the park with tennis courts and a child friendly park and playground opposite.

The park is proud of its wildlife, but encourages visitors not to feed the many birds, possums and the occasional koala. There is a very small, but pleasant beach on the northern part of the headland that looks ideal for summer swimming.

While Nelson Bay is clearly the focus for tourism at Port Stephens, Soldiers Point offers many of the same facilities but at a very much smaller scale in comparison. Just a minute from the park, you will find the Soldiers Point Marina. Apart from expensive looking cruisers and yachts, you find a fine dining restaurant, boat hire and you'll be able to buy provisions for your trip at the General Store on the water here. Also nearby is a café, take-a-way tucker and another General Store. In Soldiers Point 'village' you'll find a collection of shops including a few restaurants and an excellent fish and chip shop. Nearby is the massive and eye catching Soldiers Point Bowling Club. Holberts Oyster Farm is only a few minutes drive away and you can't get much fresher that those available at the farm store.

From Soldiers Point, you can easily visit all the highlights of the Port Stephens peninsular in a day. Take the ferry from Nelson Bay to Tea Gardens or go on a Dolphin Watch cruise. Stroll one of the many beaches, like the magnificent stretch of sand at Shoal Bay or the largest rolling sand dunes in the southern hemisphere near Anna Bay. There are wineries, brewery tours, macadamia farms and even a Shark and Ray centre.

After a hard day exploring Port Stephens, you can look forward to returning to your Sunset Villa. Pour yourself your favourite drink or have some good person do it for you, sit down and relax while watching the unfolding free sunset show.

If Port Stephens was really a dog, it would be wagging its tail with delight.
