Hamburgers and milkshakes become glamorous at the retro Soda Rock Diner in South Yarra. Ideal for an adorable daytime date, Soda Rock is styled as a 1950s American diner, complete with jukeboxes, vintage advertisements and a menu reminiscent of a golden era.

The vinyl-seated booths comfortably fit two patrons, but you can squeeze in up to four. A real working jukebox sits beside the ketchup and salt -true hallmarks of American cuisine- on each table, so make sure to bring fifty cent coins. You won't hear any Top 40 hits of the last fifty or so years at Soda Rock, instead the atmosphere is set by the likes of Elvis. A row of bar stools lining the chrome countertop is the perfect place to perch whilst you sip on a spider.

Soda Rock is famed for their hamburgers, with a former sign in the window proudly proclaiming their burgers to be the best in Melbourne. This is a lot to live up to, but in my experience it's not far from true. They aren't greasy like burgers all too often are, and arrive adorably presented with a miniature American flag toothpick pressed into the bun. Soda Rock also specialises in oversized hot dogs and chilli fries, with smiley fries (normal chips with sauce squirted onto the plate in the shape of a smiley face) for less adventurous patrons.

Traditionally flavoured milkshakes and malts are available, along with cookie shakes, which are milkshakes with cookie pieces blended in. Flavoured cokes, with specially imported syrups mixed into regular coke, are another famed beverage of Soda Rock- you have to try the cherry coke at least once. Of course, less sugar-filled drink options such as water and diet coke are available, but Soda Rock is certainly not the kind of eatery you would visit if you're on a diet.

A range of celebrities, from Paris Hilton to Jimmy Barnes , have previously visited Soda Rock. A full list of their star guests can be seen on their website .

Conveniently close to South Yarra station, Soda Rock is located in the heart of the Chapel Street Precinct , making for a kitsch finish to a day of boutique shopping.
