Want to introduce your kids to the snow these school holidays without the cost and freeze factor? Snowtime in the Gardens at the Hunter Valley Gardens is the perfect place for you.

Held over three weeks in the July school holidays, Snowtime in the Gardens is the ultimate family outing or getaway for those who love everything frozen. This year it's even bigger, with two large dedicated snowfields and exciting new rides, including a purpose-built Italian-made traditional carousel.

Kids (big and small) can try their hand at ice skating, tobogganing, and obliterating each other with the Snow Ball Challenge (like volleyball, but with snow).

For the older kids, there's a cool Super Slide that spans 35 metres long and 12 metres high. There is also a ferris wheel and swing chair ride for the adventurous folk. Little ones can enjoy face painting, watching live ice sculpting, inflatable fun and the arcade alley.

Meanwhile, mums and dads can find reprieve from the ice with a casual wander about the 10 magnificently-themed gardens, including an oriental, English rose and storybook garden.

Accommodation is in abundance but it pays to get in early as it sells out fast. There are some great value accommodation packages on offer if you act early. Harrigan's Irish Pub & Accommodation provides family friendly accommodation right next to the Gardens while the Mecure Resort Hunter Valley is a short 5-minute stroll past the Gardens Village next door. There's plenty of parking on-site and tickets can be purchased online. Best of all, kids 3 and under are free.
