Be patriotic with a
Backyarder (beef and tomato sausage with Coopers Ale sauce, cheese and coleslaw) or an
Australian Fare (this time the beef and tomato sausage is in a brioche roll with Berenberg sauce). More exotic options include the
Wagyu Beef,
Toulouse (mushrooms with truffle sauce) and
Beef and Horseradish. Go German with the
Weiss Wurst or
German Bratwurst, or try Greek - a lamb, rosemary and oregano sausage served with crumbled feta. Those craving an all-American hot dog will not be disappointed, with the delightfully unhealthy
American Classic, and the
Chillidog.
Vegetarians are able to enjoy Snag Stand too, with vegetarian sausages made from potato, smoked apple and sage available. All of their products are gluten free.
You may be overwhelmed by all the options and just want to get the plainest hot dog possible. Or perhaps you're underwhelmed and would like to try your hand at an original creation. Either way, there is the option to create your own hot dog concoction. Choose a sausage from their delectible artisan selection, a bun, sauce and toppings to build your own snack.
The hot dogs seem rather expensive for fast food, with most of them priced at $9.90 each. However there are a few cheaper options, such as the traditional American hot dog for $6.90. The serving sizes are quite large - you'll be so full that you won't be able to go back for seconds, despite wanting to sample everything on the menu.
Their sea salt coated chips are remarkably good, although there is only one size option. A selection of dipping sauces is available - the fresh herb aioli was recommended as being the most popular by a staff member, and it's not hard to see why. At $3.90 for a serving of chips and an extra $1 for the sauce, they're not cheap but they certainly are tasty.
Rather than use the old-school method of calling out your name when your food is ready, or remembering which order is yours, the staff utilise a far more modern tool. When your order is ready, they buzz you using a beeper that is given to you once you've made your order. There is only about a five minute wait between placing your order and your buzzer going off.

While the sausages may be on the gourmet side of fast food, the seating arrangements sadly are not. There are a smattering of high-set tables with stools outside the stand, which are filled with patrons enjoying their snags during the peak lunch hours. When I went, the only free table was in full sun, and I had to wait until a shaded spot became available. But with the limited space afforded to Snag Stand, you can't blame them for maximising the area they have by having a few small tables.
Across the road from Snag Stand is the
State Library, so perhaps you are better off enjoying your hot dog on its ample lawn.
