National Parks South Australia is holding an Adventure Day at Shepherds Hill Recreation Park on Sunday March 20, with a heap of free things to do for all the family. The day will showcase the newly upgraded bike trails that have been completed at this popular park south of Adelaide.

If you haven't been to Shepherds Hill Recreation Park before, then you can read all about it here . Its large area of unspoiled green space attracts people of all ages. Bike riders of all types, bush walkers, and locals walking their dogs mix with nature lovers and bird watchers as they enjoy the park. are also often to be seen.

The Adventure Day is a joint effort by National Parks South Australia with regular park users - the Eden Field Archers, Marion Riding Club and Friends of the Shepherds Hill Recreation Park. It aims to showcase the new features of the park, and encourage more people to come and use it.

Several activities are planned that are great fun for kids and families. Here are the free things to do in the park that have been announced so far:

  • Learn to ride a bike lessons with a ranger. This is aimed at families with kids of riding age up to about 12 years old, focusing on how to ride off road. The lessons will be held between 10-2 at the new easy bike loop near the Ayliffes Road entrance to Shepherds Hill Recreation Park.

  • Take a guided tour of the new bike trails through the recreation park. Park rangers will adjust tours to be appropriate for the group they lead. The guided tour will be suitable for all ages and abilities.

  • Not riding a bike? Follow the walking trails with a park ranger or volunteers from Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park. You're welcome to bring your dog along, but please remember it must remain on a lead. The walking tours will be a great way to observe the native animals and plants in the park, and to appreciate all the work has been done planting seedlings.

  • Come and Try Archery at the Eden Fields Archers range. Probably more suitable for older children and adults with good upper body coordination and strength.

  • After you have exercised yourself with the free things to do on the bike trails and guided walking tours, you're sure to have acquired an appetite. The Marion Riding Club will be happy to help out, with food and drinks available at their sausage sizzle (proceeds support the club).

There's a fair chance it will be a warm day, and Friends of Shepherds Hill Recreation Park will keep you cool on the Adventure Day by selling Golden North Ice creams. All funds will supporting their volunteer activities in the park.

Head over to the National Parks South Australia Facebook page or the event page to find out more about all the free things to do on the day.

Don't forget to bring sun protection and plenty of water, as the park doesn't have any facilities. Appropriate protective gear would be a good idea for children riding the more difficult trails, and of course a helmet is required. If you're vegan or vegetarian you should bring your own food as this probably won't be catered for.

The Shepherds Hill Recreation Park is Nature Play SA's Park of the Month in March. It's the perfect place for kids and families to engage in free nature play for a healthier lifestyle. Find more ideas nature play things to do here .
