The Penrith Gaels Irish Club is one of those small, out of the way, modest, low profile places that makes you wonder how anyone knows it exists. In the back streets of Cambridge Park near Penrith, next to an industrial estate and seemingly built down a ditch, it's hardly the most attractive location.

What the Gaels Club lacks in grandeur is more than made up by its charming staff who invoke the Irish 'craic' friendless and some super Irish food. The Shamrock Bistro has an all-day Irish fry up with Bangers, Bacon, Eggs, White and Black Pudding, Tomato and Mushies. There's also a traditional sounding Irish Stew that tonight is one of the specials of the day. My better half Ms Pam falls for the Beef and Guinness Pie and I can't go past the Crumbed Irish Sausages with a Guinness Sauce, Mustard, Mash and Veg. It's all washed down with more Guinness. Is there anything else to order at an Irish bar?

After downing three of these generously sized Irish snags, normally, I couldn't, wouldn't, possibly eat anything more - but it's a Wednesday at the Gaels and that means it's $2.50 cake night. The line-up includes Blueberry Cheesecake, Lemon Tart, a massive Custard Strawberry Torte and something evil called "Mortal Sin". But the star attraction for me is a Cherry Ripe Slice which looks and tastes like a giant Cherry Ripe only much lighter.

We leave just as the Shamrock's tables are at capacity. The Gaels Club maybe low profile and out of the way, but it's popular, to be sure, to be sure.
