Shabby Treasures Down the Lane is located in a tucked away part of the leafy Newmarket suburbs. When you drive down Thurlow Street, there is a gap between two old houses where you can turn into the laneway and follow the signs.

Wander into the Shabby Treasures shed and on your left you'll see the counter to order your morning or afternoon tea. You can either sit indoors or outdoors in the garden. You won't be surprised to find the décor is classic shabby chic. The shop sells authentic chalk paint so you will be surrounded by antiques, flowers in pots and pastel painted and distressed wooden furniture and chairs.

I enjoyed my generous sized warm hot chocolate, while my dining partner drank a pot of Madam Flavour English breakfast. I munched on a delicious scone with cream, butter and strawberry jam, and tasted my partner's sundried tomato and ham muffin. There's a small selection of chocolate chip biscuits, melting moments, cakes, raisin toast and other savoury muffins which were also tempting. The cafe serves coffee by Picco Espresso. If you are looking for a cold drink then there is soft drink, milkshakes and Lipton iced tea.

Shabby Treasures caters to people with food intolerances with lactose-free or soy milk and one gluten free option. The prices are reasonable and it's enjoyable relaxing outside amongst the flowers and herbs reading the paper. Can you think of a better way to spend your weekend?

After our enjoyable morning tea, I wandered through the rest of the building to view the Shabby Treasures shop. It stocks antiques, homeware, gifts, handmade teapot covers, and knitted scarves. I discovered the easy to use Annie Sloan chalk paint at the Paint Bar. The owner Jenny Hayden offers painting classes to learn how to use this paint (not to be confused with chalkboard paint). It's easy to sand without using muscle and great for producing a distressed effect. You can purchase a starter kit, sample and regular pots of paint, wax and good quality paint brushes.

While you are in the neighbourhood visit nearby Melanie Rose Photography for your next portrait or the amazing paintings of Lisa at Taylor King Gallery and Studio.

Shabby Treasures Down the Lane is an ideal place to take your mum for a catch-up or meet up with girlfriends over a pot of steaming tea or mug of coffee and then wander through the shop to take home a sample pot of chalk paint.
