I invite you on a mission and should you choose to accept.
I can tell you that this mission will involve excellent food and wine at a Sydney restaurant, but the name cannot be revealed. You'll get to meet and mingle with new people who are also on the same mission at the same venue. Additionally, you'll have an exclusive chance to hear a chef speak about their passion for the meals they prepare, which is an opportunity you normally won't find at a restaurant unless you're a VIP or at the chef's table. Unfortunately I cannot tell you where the mission will take place, but you will receive a text message with the details about an hour beforehand. Are you intrigued yet?
This is the premise of
Secret Foodies. Secret Foodies launched in April 2010 by Ms Darlinghurst, blogger behind
Eat Drink Play, a blog exploring all things Eastern suburbs, particularly eating, drinking and playing as one might guess from the name.
Ms Darlinghurst, or Alex Adams in real life, was inspired by the
guerilla dining movement and also wanted to find a way to connect food and wine lovers in person. We can all connect on social networking these days, but it is refreshing to have an event in which one of the focuses is to bring people together over the love of great food, wine and conversation, all offline.
A sample of who you could meet at an event.
So how does Secret Foodies work and how do you get in on the secret? It's simple. Head to the Secret Foodies
website to check out
upcoming events. Only vague details will be provided so there's not much to decide on. Find a date that works and book it in.
Events will generally have a teaser title as well but with Secret Foodies it's all about the element of surprise, so just step out of your comfort zone and book in.
Then you wait. Let the anticipation build until the day of the event and two hours before dinner commences, you will receive a text message of the suburb of where you need to be. About 30 to 60 minutes prior to the event, you will be sent the full address, just enough time for you to make your way to secret dining location.
Past venues have included
Chophouse,
Four in Hand,
The Commons and
Balzac Restaurant. And to mix things up, not all events are held in a restaurant. For instance, this summer Secret Foodies took it to the rooftop for a Summer rooftop picnic and this winter promises for one
warehouse dining experience.
Don't be afraid to have a little fun with dinner - make it a mission and don't say no to adventure. Be a bit spontaneous and you never know what you'll discover.
