Although many might prefer brand new, never worn clothing right off the hanger, it's not always possible for one reason or another. If you're someone who adores shopping, Secondhand Wardrobe

Week takes place from February 26 – March 3 and is a great chance to pick up some new clothes. There are so many benefits of getting secondhand clothing, some of which include getting big discounts, being able to significantly expand your wardrobe, and buying fabulous fashions that aren't being made anymore. Considering NYC is one of the fashion capitals of the world, there are a variety of ways to participate in Secondhand Wardrobe Week.
Learn how to look through secondhand items
Although you should check brand new clothing items before purchasing them, it's even more important to do so when buying secondhand items. Check that there are no holes, rips or loose strings in the seams. Take a close look at the fabric and make sure there's no stains. Quickly sniff the fabric; if it smells moldy, just doesn't smell right. Pass up on it.
Donate or sell your unwanted items
Give someone else a chance to purchase some of your fabulous clothing by donating your unwanted items. Three great places that will certainly help pass along your clothes include
The Salvation Army,
Goodwill, and
Dress for Success. Help them out by making sure your clothes are clean, stain-free, and have no rips or tears in them. Another option is to sell what you no longer want, which you can do in a variety of ways including selling them on
eBay, bringing them to a consignment shop or selling them locally on
Craigslist.
Purchase clothing online
There are so many places to buy secondhand clothing online ranging from purchasing them outright to bidding on them. Two major places to check are
Etsy.com and
eBay.com. Another option for getting free or discounted clothing during Secondhand Wardrobe Week is to check out the
Craigslist page for your area. You'll be able to pick the clothes up without paying a shipping charge.
Have a clothing swap
Get together a group of friends and hold a clothing swap. It's a great way to exchange clothes with friends who you already know have a good fashion sense. Sort the items by price range, then by style (i.e. casual, formal, etc) so it's easier to properly do the exchange.
Purchase clothing in person
There are an incredible amount of places across NYC to purchase secondhand clothing, but not all of them are worth visiting. However, there are three fabulous places where you will have no problem finding something you love:
City Opera Thrift Shop,
The Arthritis Foundation Thrift Shop, and
Beacon's Closet. The Salvation Army is also an excellent option, and there are
several locations across the city so there is likely already one near you.
During Secondhand Wardrobe Week, make some room in your closet and go pick out a variety of previously-loved clothing that can completely revamp your wardrobe. From February 26 – March 3, get ready to change up your wardrobe all for a discounted price.
