Peruse secondhand books over an organic fair-trade coffee at Second Edition, a charity bookshop run by the Brotherhood of St Laurence. You're welcome to sit down and enjoy a read of a pre-loved text, although they might prefer it if you bought the book first.

Second Edition provides you with something for your mind to chew on as you have your coffee fix.

Alongside their extensive range of secondhand literature is a vintage collection of magazines and records. Like any cafe that supplies magazines, they don't mind if you have a flick through their outdated glossy mags as you sip on an organic juice. There is also a selection of biscuits and teas on offer.

No dusty old op shop, Second Edition embraces the retro appeal of their books, with their dark wood shelving and vintage-looking labels. They show off their literary finds in a gorgeous tree shelf, which stretches all the way up to the ceiling. There are comfortable couches to lounge upon and free wifi available if you care to bring your laptop.

Despite being a budget secondhand bookstore, Second Edition spared no expense with the decor.

All profits from Second Edition are routed into the charitable initiatives of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, which helps disadvantaged people into a better quality of life. All the books are quite cheap, even for secondhand, and can typically be picked up for a few dollars each. Sometimes they have rare books that are worth a bit more, and priced accordingly. Reduce the cost of purchasing your next novel by bringing in some of your old books to donate, which entitles you to 50% off your next purchase.

Second Edition functions as a shopfront to their online store, Brotherhood Books, which sells secondhand books that have been donated. As they have received over 45 tonnes of donated books in the last decade, it would be difficult to store their entire collection at Second Edition- the rest are available online. While Second Edition is best for a browse, Brotherhood Books is easy to use with a searchable archive and delivers to your door for a small fee.
