If you haven't been to a Schutzenfest then can you really call yourself a South Aussie?

South Australia has had a strong history of German people contributing to the state, from the vineyards of the Barossa to Hahndorf with its German influenced architecture and the amazing range of food.

[ADVERT]But for more than 40 years the German Club has brought the Schutzenfest to Adelaide so that everyone can enjoy some of Germany's traditional food, beer, dancing and music . I can even remember my father taking the family to one around 1969, although sadly I can't find the photos.

There was a time when some people went for a booze fuelled day, but I think they are long gone and the attractions of unusual food and a full program of entertainment are enough to keep the crowd happy and fairly sober.

Both Friday and Saturday are packed with activities for all ages and of course there will be amusements, rides and face painting to make this a family event.

Me, I think I'd go just for the food. But I wonder if they have any of those fancy schnapps my Austrian mate used to make me drink a few years ago...
