School Holiday Minecraft™ Activities at M.A.D.E

With over million registered users worldwide, Minecraft™ has fixated school aged children around the globe, and is one gaming craze that does not appear to be cooling off anytime soon.

The Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (M.A.D.E) in conjunction with The-Core and Federation University has embraced all things Minecraft™ with a Spring school holiday program encouraging virtual creation of a key historical event that shaped Australian national identity.

A competition kicked off on 1 September to give Australian Minecraft™ miners and digital designers the opportunity to build their interpretations of the Eureka Stockade.

Registrations are now open for users aged 18 years and under, to build a reenactment of the Stockade on a special custom designed server MADECORE. Submit entries to M.A.D.E by 1 November, with a chance to win some great prizes. Three shortlisted entries will be selected and turned into 3D models by Federation University Australia, then exhibited at M.A.D.E from 1-7 December. The overall Minecraft™ Eureka Stockade winner will be announced at M.A.D.E's Family Fun Fair on 6 December 2014. Register here .

This year marks the 160th Anniversary of Eureka Stockade, a time when a group of largely young people, aged 16 to 27, fought injustice and won some of the first democratic rights in the world.

To commemorate this pivotal event in Australian democratic history, M.A.D.E in Ballarat continues with Minecraft™ related celebrations hosting a School Holiday Minecraft™ Lab running from 22 September to 3 October. Activites include:

* Minecraft™ themed Exhibition Worksheet.

Minecraft™ figures will be hidden around M.A.D.E's exhibition. Find miners, their wives and children, police troopers, redcoat soldiers, and even the pikeman's dog using the worksheet as a guide.

* Minecraft™ play using M.A.D.E's laptop and tablet devices.

The Minecraft Lab will be set up with digital devices to use. Learn the gaming craft for the first time otherwise registered Minecraft™ users can show-off their expertise.

* Minecraft™ themed Papercraft Activities.

A selection of Minecraft™ paper activities inspired by the popular digital game will keep you and your kids busy. Cut, fold and colour your creation and take home to admire, otherwise leave behind to be exhibited at M.A.D.E.

* Cyber Storytime at 11am and 2pm

Sit back and enjoy an adventurous tale with a colonial goldfield constructed Minecraft™ terrain as the backdrop. Displayed on M.A.D.E giant, digital touchscreen, this story will take you on a block-by-block walk through of the Eureka Stockade.

M.A.D.E is one of Australia's newest museums, located on the site of the historic of the Eureka Stockade. Using state of the art technology and interactive content, M.A.D.E immerses people into a historic world to contemplate what contemporary democracy means to them today.
