Food comes in many colours – more than you might think, and it's supposed to be good for you to eat as many colours as possible. So it must be pretty good for you to eat at
Satsuma, which serves some of the most colourful dishes in London.
The food is what restaurant guides call modern Japanese: sushi, sashimi, maki, ramen, yaki udon, yaki soba and salads and sides to keep more western tastes happy. But the king of meals at Satsuma is the bento – which has a little bit of everything served with a main meal – salmon teriyaki, chicken katsu or vegetable tempura for example - in a neat little portioned off lunch box type thing. The décor is modern Japanese as well, long communal tables and benches of the kind that Wagamamas got us all used to. And the upstairs section has a good view onto the street.
A personal recommendation, and one of their most colourful meals, try the Bara Chirashi, which is like a selection of sushi but all mixed up in a bowl together with the rice. Makes it a lot easier to eat. Comes as a set with miso. But recommended to be imbibed with plum wine – they serve it without soda water and with the plum in the bottom of the martini glass.
Good value for this much colour and flavour, served this quickly and in this location.
