Is this perhaps Adelaide's best kept secret and cheapest family day out all rolled into one? Where?, you ask? When can I go? Sit down, relax and read on - The South Australian Society of Model & Experimental Engineers (SASMEE) is located in Millswood and may not sound like the type of place you take your kids for a fun day out, but don't be misled by the highbrow moniker, this isn't a laboratory filled with white coats and strange smells. SASMEE is a group of model enthusiasts of the locomotive and maritime persuasion who open the doors of their magical little corner of Adelaide to the public every first Sunday and third Saturday of the month. The grounds are open from 1.30 - 5.00pm with train rides from the two stations commencing at 2.00pm and winding up at 4.30pm.
All manner of steam, diesel and electric trains run around well kept lawns and grounds that are set amongst tall shady trees and a small lake where the marine model enthusiasts sail their boats and ships. I spent the whole afternoon there with my four year old son recently and it was literally non-stop fun. We hopped onboard our first ride at 2.00pm sharp and never looked back.
Each train completes two circuits that take you around the park passing over bridges and through tunnels and often past the other trains running on the opposing track. You can judge the queues at each station on your way round to see where your quickest next ride will be and we actually made a little game out of guessing the smallest queue and then racing to it every time our train pulled in. The afternoon was over in a flash and my son was sad to leave after the last ride - a sure sign that he'd had an afternoon to remember.
It's hard to imagine a more idyllic setting for a day out with the kids in the convenience of inner suburban Adelaide and the best bit is the admission price - $6 each. I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find better bang for your buck on the weekend anywhere in Adelaide.
