Sara Baras is a world-famous flamenco dancer. Her amazing skill and passion for the Spanish art-form has seen her enjoy a lengthy career, one that has seen her wow audiences all over the globe, including performances in Melbourne last year.

Sara Baras, All Her Voices is a documentary chronicling preparations for Baras' most recent work 'Voces'. A highly ambitious project, 'Voces' seeks to pay homage to the storied history of flamenco and the many and varied figures who were instrumental in its history - many of whom were maligned at the time for performing controversially or for breaking the rules, but who are now considered pioneers of the craft.



The film begins with preparations for the Paris premiere of 'Voces'. There are three weeks to go before the performance and Baras and her company must pull together the show quickly. After Paris, the show is taken on the road for performances in Mexico, the US and Spain. The film weaves together a record of the world tour with a history of Baras' career, life and family.

As the film progresses we learn more about Baras and her work ethic. She's a perfectionist and demands as much from her fellow performers and support staff. She's devoted to dancing and is passionate about not only performing but innovating in her chosen field. The film's strengths are when it touches on her family life. Her husband performs alongside her, but touring the globe means being away from her young son who remains back in Spain, and the sacrifices she must make in order to keep performing become apparent.



Sara Baras, All Her Voices offers an insightful look into a talented performer. The stage scenes look wonderful on the big screen and the rest of the documentary is beautifully shot. What's lacking is a more coherent narrative, one explaining Baras' past work and career, which would be helpful for those with little knowledge of flamenco. A little of Baras' philosophising could also have been edited out with no damage to the film. Still, the film is exuberant and passionate, a great primer on the wonderfully vivid world of flamenco.
