Sand. It's not just something that sticks to your feet so you can track it through the house when you get home from the beach. In the talented hands of the maestros of the sand from Sand Sculpting Australia those tiny silica particles are the stuff that dreams are made of. From 26 December 2012 to 28 April 2013 sand-sculpted ocean dreams will come to life on Frankston Waterfront with Sand Sculpting Australia's Under the Sea Exhibition .

Frankston Waterfront is the home of Australia's premier sand sculpting exhibition. Last year's event enticed more than 100,000 people over four months to see the whimsical creations of crack teams of sand sculptors for the magical world of Toytopia .

See some of the amazing sculptures from last year's Toytopia exhibition in the YouTube clip below.

This year they'll be using 3,500 tonnes of sand to create a watery wonderland. Planned sculptures include whales, mermaids, coral, sharks and Poseidon. As a special treat this year's exhibition will be highlighting the work of popular Australian children's author and illustrator, Graeme Base. His rollicking, rhyming, read-aloud classic, The Sign of the Seahorse, with colourful characters like the fish ingenue Pearl Trout, and the dastardly Gropmund T Groper was a favourite in our house for many years. Base himself will be on hand over a number of weekends for book signings. You will need to check the website closer to the opening date for details.

Free kids' activities are available on weekends, school holidays and public holidays. They include such crowd pleasers as the giant sand pit, sand sculpting workshops where you can learn from the professionals, speed carving displays, and that ubiquitous festival staple, face painting. This year there will also be a LEGO play zone where your kids can let their imaginations run wild on the "Under the Sea' theme.

Sand sculpting is an ancient art form with one school of thought suggesting that when the Egyptians weren't pulling the brains of the dead out with hooks through their noses they were, in fact, carving sand. Plenty of it around, I suppose. But it took the Americans (who else?) to bring sand carving into the big time in the 1970's. It's a highly technical and exacting process that involves the building of wooden forms into which wet sand is compacted to create blocks which are carved, giving life to the creator's ideas. Come to Frankston to see the very clever end results of all this effort and imagination.
