Russian Resurrection

The Russian Film Festival, Russian Resurrection, will be running in Sydney until the 10th of November at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington.

There are two highlights which I would encourage everyone to see. The first is the movie Vanished Empire which depicts:

"the heyday of the Soviet State at the peak of its power, which also marks the starting point of its collapse".

It's an excellent film. If you need more convincing here is another review from Cibbuano over at MovieCritic.com.au.

Tickets for regular screenings are $16. Here are the session times along with ticketing information.

The second highlight is a screening of the 1929 silent film The New Babylon accompanied by the SBS Youth Orchestra at the City Recital Hall.

New Babylon is a great example of the enthusiasm of Russia's film makers in the early years of the communist state, when they still believed that the Soviet union was (or would soon be) the pinnacle of human society and that film could convince everyone else of the same thing.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased here.

Why? Something different on the big screen.

WHEN: Until Monday the 10th of November
WHERE: Chauvel Cinema, Paddington
COST: $16
