Victoria's biggest fun run is back for 2010!
Although it's only in its fifth year of operation, the Herald Sun/City Link
Run For The Kids is a much anticipated fun run, bringing Melbournians together for the sake of charity. In 2009 the run raised almost a million dollars for the Royal Children's Hospital, as part of the Good Friday Appeal. Not bad for a day's work!
The Good Friday Appeal began in 1931 when a group of journalists from The Herald and Weekly Times organised a sporting carnival to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital. Now it is a hugely popular annual benefit in which celebrities get involved and Australians are known for being exceptionally generous and emptying their wallets for this worthy cause.
This year, The Run For The Kids will be held on Sunday March 14th and it has two running courses – aptly named the Long Course and the Short Course. The Long Course is 14.6km in distance and participants even get to run through the Domain Tunnel and over the Bolte Bridge. The course map can be downloaded
here. If you're more about the fun and less about the run, the 5.2km Short Course might be more your thing. Scenic highlights including the Yarra River, Birrarung Marr and Federation Square.
Unfortunately entries are no longer being accepted for 2010 as entries have reached the maximum participation level of 30,000 but it doesn't mean you can't help. Around 400 volunteers are required to help run the event. Information on volunteer roles can be found
here. To register, fill out the form
here. Alternatively, you come along to the event and cheer the runners along.
The Run For The Kids is a special day to be involved in. If you missed out on running this year, don't forget you can always make a donation to the Good Friday Appeal
online. Every dollar counts.
