Nipping at the heels of the gourmet burger evolution, Perth foodies are now in the midst of a gourmet hot dog revolution, as the basic sausage-in-a-bun mainstay undergoes a cheeky revamp to become the latest trend in easy dining.

A little insider knowledge goes a long way, as a good friend and Freo native introduced me to the not-so-simple but very satisfying delights of one of his go-to places for a good dog.

Run Amuk , located close to
the corner of South Terrace and Commercial Street in South Fremantle is well trafficked by locals but also sports a well placed HOT DOGS sign to catch the eye of the hungry as cars drive through the area to the port city.

There are funky tables on the footpath for alfresco dining (a good option if you've got a fur buddy in tow), but the interior is bright and spacious, with fun elements such as Where's Wally laminated tabletops, a toy-cars-in-motion formation sculptured to the wall, and an undersea adventure mural that instantly makes you smile with it's silly sailor octopus serving up a dancing hot
dog.

For my first time out, I went with a recommendation to try the Rukus, a two chilli score on the hot scale consisting of a bratwurst sausage (70% pork, 30% beef with a blend of herbs and spices), chilli and lime sambal, crispy prosciutto, spinach, aged cheddar, sour cream & jalapenos. Very tasty it was too, served up on what looked to be a piece of polished corrugated steel roofing fashioned to plate the hotdog of your choice.

Mischievous menu names short list the meals on offer, with prices ranging from $8.50 - $14.00. Available sides include coleslaw and shoe string fries, and milkshakes and juices are your drinks of choice (though there is a large fridge to the side
with more options). Only one dessert is listed, but it's a doozey – a Knickerbokerglory that I'm definitely having the next time out.

Run Amuk pride themselves on sourcing all their meat from WA farmers and the bratwurst sausages are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives in addition to being gluten free.

There are also vegetarian options with locally handmade vegan sausages using gluten free and organic ingredients.

Next time you're heading to Fremantle, go south and Run Amuk, your taste buds will thank you.
