The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is hosting a Community Street Party on Sunday 7 April, to
celebrate its 150 years of service as Australia's only specialist eye, ear, nose and throat hospital.
And everyone is invited, not just those connected with the hospital.
It is a family day with a lot of unique activities. Many of the attractions are in keeping with the hospital's mission. For example guide dogs will be there courtesy of
Guide Dogs Victoria
You will be able to see what it is like to play sport without being able to rely on your sight, with cricket demonstrations and workshops from
The Victorian Blind Cricket Association .
There will also be plenty of food, music and games.
For inquisitive souls, such as myself, there will be behind the scenes guided tours taken by hospital staff. This will cover areas not normally open to the public including the underground tunnel which links the Eye and Ear Hospital with St Vincent's.
This tunnel stretches164 metres under Victoria Parade 10 metres below the surface.
It is no coincidence that the colouring and design of the tunnel is similar to those in the city loop because they were built at the same time. This was because the equipment used for the city loop tunnel was lying idle and it seemed like a worthwhile project.
Work began in 1978 and the tunnel was officially opened in 1983.
The tunnel has also been used by film and television crews a low-budget science fiction film and a music video for the song Fall for You, by the Whitlams. Which you can see
here.
