We stumbled upon this excellent culinary venue after discovering it online. It was just off the beaten track for us, in other words behind Hoddle Highway.

It's funny how habitual routine becomes. Driving down unfamiliar narrow suburban streets in search of a gastro pub was a mini adventure and it turned out to be this lovely grand victorian building tucked away in a side street.

As with all these establishments, you have to brave the bar, but zip round the back and it opens into an opulent dining room that someone had done a first-rate renovation on.

The seats are comfy and even though there was a large group near us the generous dining room proportions gave us enough conversation space for it not to be a bother.

It was a cold night, so I went for the Confit Duck Leg with peas, lardon and broad bean salad and honey for $30; it was yummy.

My partner had the fish and chips meals for $28. It had just enough crunch on the outside and was delicious on the inside – I nicked a piece just be sure you understand.

We felt very snug and smug by the end of the evening and I'm already planning my next jaunt over to the other side.
