The Kokoda Track might be thousands of kilometres away, but that doesn't mean that Brisbane residents can't honour fallen soldiers along a walk.
The
Royal Australian Regiment Association National Memorial Walk is a memorial that was created to commemorate Australian soldiers who died while serving overseas. The walk was constructed in 1998 at Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Royal Australian Regiment. As many of the members of the Regiment were buried overseas, the memorial walk gave their family as place to mourn.
The walk is a 700 metre path that winds through a man made section of Australian bush. Each tree is a memorial to one of the 685 members of the Regiment, and is marked with a plaque at its base. A memorial building provides a place for remembrance and is a popular gathering spot on Anzac Day and war anniversaries. The building contains a plaque listing the fallen soldiers.
The grounds also contain a social gathering area known as Diggers Rest. Diggers Rest provides for visitors an eating area, with barbeques, undercover picnic tables and shady, landscaped grounds.
The Memorial walk is maintained and tended by a group of volunteers so do the right thing and leave the grounds exactly as you found them.
