2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic tragedy.
On 14 April 1912 the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean, taking with it nearly 1500 passengers.
The Titanic was an emblem of the Edwardian era: "a monument to ingenuity, extravagance, audacity and heroism."
On a rainy day recently, I dropped in to the
Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide to check out their
Titanic exhibition .
It was great. The display is full of memorabilia from the era: clothing, newspaper articles, photographs and a small cinema where you can sit and view a short movie.
Once you've finished viewing the exhibition, the rest of the Maritime Museum is there for you to enjoy. You can step through the changing times of shipping, transportation and migration.
You can search their computer history records for your ancestors and you can climb all over the replica sailing boat. The museum is hands-on, fully interactive and a lot of fun for the whole family.
There are elevators to help those with prams and wheelchairs navigate through the different levels.
The South Australian Maritime Museum is located in Lipson Street in Port Adelaide and is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 10am to 5pm.
Entry prices are:
Adult: $10
Concession: $8
Child: $5
Family: $25 (2 adults & up to 5 children)
with further discounts available for groups and school visits.
Your entry ticket also gets you in to the Lighthouse which is located on the waterfront near the Fishermans Wharf Markets. Climb the steps and enjoy the views over "the Port".
Get down there and have a look if you can, the exhibition runs until October.
