Ristretto is one of those little hole-in-the-wall cafes, tucked away in a CBD arcade, that it would be easy to walk past if it weren't for the tantalising aroma of fresh coffee emanating from behind the counter.
There's not a lot to it: counter, drinks fridge, small food selection, a few stools to perch on and of course the coffee machine with two Mazzer grinders. Ristretto doesn't need anything else; it's all about the coffee.
With no visible menu, it's definitely one for the coffee connoisseur, although I am certain the friendly staff would help you out if you were unsure of what was available. I stopped by on a freezing-cold winter day with my toddler in tow, and they were happy to throw in a babycino – not on their normal menu – for her with my reasonably-priced long black.
A black coffee is a good test of any café; without the milk, the coffee either shines through or tastes like muck. This one was absolutely perfect: smooth and rich but not bitter, obviously ground and brewed to perfection. Ristretto roasts its own beans as well, so you know it's fresh.
The coffee was promptly made and the staff were friendly. I also observed them chatting to a couple of regulars, which is a good sign that both their service and coffee are consistently good.
