started as a small site with the goal of sharing organic home grown food with the community

The website was founded by Alistair Martin and Helena Martin in Adelaide, South Australia.

The two self-proclaimed foodies got the idea when they saw so much food wastage from a large amount of citrus trees dotted around the suburbs – with the fruit all going to waste. At the same time, similar fruit was being sold in the supermarkets – some of it coming from overseas.

They decided to create a website devoted to sharing food in the community. They reminisced about past generations – where food was naturally organic and was swapped and sold in the community. The website was designed to bring back that sense of community sharing.

Alistair and Helena are particularly concerned to bring back natural, organic health into the community. They seek to promote health and well-being through organically home grown food, micro eco-systems and food waste reduction.

The instructions for using the website are simple and easy to use. If we are looking for food in our area or a particular type of food we can go into the search area. There is a separate area for posting what we have available ourselves, as well as being able to post what we are growing and when it will become available. Another section on the website is devoted to food and fruit trees that are freely available from roadsides, council areas etc…

Another thing that I particularly like about the site is the ability to make friends on the site and to communicate with other people. Now that really is building a community!

Surprisingly has expanded very quickly, not just across Australia but in many other countries in the world. It appears that word of mouth has traveled quickly and there are now locations as far away as the United States, Germany, Norway and South East Asia.

At the moment Ripe near Me is crowd funding as part of the Dream Starter campaign funded by ING DIRECT Australia. Their website is www.startsomegood.com/ripenearme
They have already put a great deal of their own money and time into their project and now need more funds to grow the website and expand it further.
There were many different tables from different community groups across Adelaide. Many council areas have their own community gardens and farmers markets.
