Enjoy a mixture of extreme speed and history at the
Redcliffe First Settlement Festivalon 12 and 13 September.
185 years ago, the Brig Amity arrived on the shores of Redcliffe in order to build the first European settlement in Queensland, the First Settlement Festival is the annual commemoration of this event. The theme of the 2009 First Settlement Festival is Kids First! to recognise the 8 children who arrived with the Brig Amity. The First Settlement Festival coincides with the final round of the
Australian Offshore Powerboat Championships which will be held at Redcliffe.
For archaeology buffs, Corscadden Park, next to the Redcliffe Museum on Anzac Avenue, is the site of a dig to search for the remains of a brick kiln built by convict labour. The site will be open for public viewing over the First Settlement Festival weekend.
Saturday's activities include a vintage car exhibition, meet and greet with the powerboat drivers, cooking demonstrations from
Morgans Seafood Restaurant and performances by
The Elements.
On Sunday the Redcliffe Jetty and foreshore become the centre of attention with the Great Gatsby Picnic, Redcliffe Superboat Grand Prix and the re-enactment of the landing at Redcliffe, including the stories of the child settlers.
With Kids First! as the 2009 theme, there is plenty happening to keep the young ones entertained. On Sunday, kids can take part in cultural dance and music events, make pirate hats, masks and other art works, play board games in the Sutton Street Mall or relax and enjoy short films at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre.
Redcliffe Parade is home to many cafes and food outlets and barbecues are available at Settlement Cove Lagoon. On Sunday, park at theRedcliffe Showgrounds and catch the shuttle bus to festival events. Even your dog is welcome (must be kept on a leash at all times).
