A few years ago, the thought of buying clothes in a second-hand shop would have had me gasping in fear!

%%Wear something that has already been worn by someone else?
No way! %%

Then I moved to Melbourne.

This city is full to the brim with dedicated followers of fashion, putting their own slant on an outfit and making it look effortless and chic. The secret? Op shops! I guarantee you will find an op shop treat in almost any part of the city you go, from St Kilda up to Brunswick and beyond.

Shopping this way has so many benefits, the most obvious one being the price! Some great finds my friends and I have come across include an Armani pencil skirt for $10, a full length black Dior dress at $20 and a pair of highly fashionable vintage Levi acid jeans for $4! You just need patience and to train your eye to spot a good quality bargain.

If you are handy with a needle and thread or a sewing machine you can add a button here, a zip there, hike up the length or remove the sleeves. You can make an outfit your own and have the chance to experiment with your style; mix a top from the 1970s, with some high-waisted jeans from the 1980s, add some accessories from 2011 and you have just created something new! You can take sewing classes at Thread Den in Fitzroy, to help maximise your op shop ops. There are all sorts of classes from basics to swim wear.

As well as fashion, you can furnish your house with everything, including sofas, tables and accessories. There are so many great op shops for furniture, such as The Brotherhood of St Laurence . A friend only recently introduced me to this organisation and it is a treasure chest of delights! You can find some of the most amazing finds at the best price; my recent find was a retro dining table

So where to start? There are op shops all over the city; you will often find little one-offs on side streets and lane ways or the more recognisable Salvos and Savers%%] superstores in main areas across the city. For some of the best finds, head out to the country. These shops have a much better variety and you are more likely to get that extra special find. This is a great way to shop, as well as care for our ever abused environment and also giving to charity. Recycling is one of the easiest ways to keep Mama Nature at the top of her game! Two good deeds in the one day must give you an edge on getting one step closer to heaven?

Now, as easy as this sounds, for some of us the natural ability to go to op shops and eye that special find, is not as easy as it sounds. So if you need some help, I stumbled across these girls - Melbourne Op Shop Tours , who will give you a little help in getting started, but I say wing it. There's more fun in it that way.
