If you are looking for a quiet escape without the crowds these holidays, you can't go past on the Sunshine Coast. This tranquil little town is nestled between Noosa Heads and Fraser Island, adjacent to the Great Sandy National Park. It's a little off the well-trodden tracks, but well worth the visit.

The first thing we did when we arrived was head up to Carlo Sandblow. It is an easy 600-metre walk through the eucalyptus trees from the carpark at the end of Cooloola Drive. We were greeted with a wide blanket of sand stretching out against a backdrop of Tin Can Bay to one side and Double Island Point to the other.

The patterns on the sand made from the wind were picture perfect. The kids loved running around on this huge mound of sand, seeing the trail of footprints they left in the otherwise undisturbed sand.

If you are adventurous, you can bring a boogie board or toboggan and slide down the dunes. We were content to just sit together on the soft sand and watch the sun go down. It was a spectacular sight.

The never-ending stretch of sand at is beautiful, with gentle waves washing up against your feet. Take a stroll until you reach the towering cliffs. Erosion of the cliffs has exposed as many as 72 different colours. You have to watch out for all the 4WDs that share the beach with you. Or alternatively, you can join them and try your hand at driving along the beach. Be sure to check at the tourist centre for permit requirements and tide information. Apparently, they have a very impressive hall of shame! Luckily, there seems to be an army of kind-hearted locals at hand to help tow inexperienced drivers out of trouble!

Fishing is also a popular activity here, or you can head to nearby Tin Can Bay to hand-feed the wild dolphins that come to visit in the mornings.

There's a range of accommodation options in . Our family of four stayed at Rainbow Oceans Palm Resort at the end of Cooloola Drive. Our oversized apartment was modern and well-equipped with all the creature comforts you could ask for. The living space and master bedroom had fantastic panoramic views of the ocean. The complex has an infinity pool which was a great place to splash around and spend a lazy afternoon. For more information, visit their website .

It was a relaxing and easy-going holiday, but there was something about the simplicity and natural beauty of the area that made it a really special place. In fact, the kids still talk about this as one of the best holidays we have had. is 2.5 hours north of Brisbane and 1.5 hours from the Sunshine Coast.
