ANZAC day this year falls on Monday the 25th of April so we are fortunate to get a long weekend. The day marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey in World War I. We remember those who served our country during war time.
Here are some ideas to enjoy your long weekend:
1. Join a Brisbane based
Meetup group and get together with some like-minded people.
2. You could purchase a commemorative ANZAC badge or beautiful scarf from the [LINK=http://poppyshop.org.au/
]Poppy Shop[/LINK].
3. Learn off by heart some poetry from the
Australian Poetry Library website.
4. Go on a walk exploring
Brisbane city following a map or book. One of the most interesting places to walk around is Toowong Cemetery.
5. Learn to play the old-school game of two-up (which is apparently illegal except for ANZAC day!)
6. Give back to your community and look at ways you can volunteer.
7. Teach your children to make paper origami cranes and tell them about the story of 'Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes'.
8. Host a barbeque at your house and entertain with some classic
Australian tunes
9. Get involved in one of
Amnesty International 's latest campaigns.
10. Order some poppy seeds from an heirloom seed company like
Diggers or plant a lavender plant.
11. Learn some
Australian slang and origins of its meaning.
12. Read "The Lucky Country" by Donald Horne or "A Fortunate Life" by Albert Facey, or another classic work by an Australian author.
13. Load up your backpack with some camping food or D.I.Y. army rations and spend some time out in nature.
14. Invite your friends around for a streaming
TripleJ radio party.
15. Watch [LINK=http://www.peterdrewarts.com/]Peter
Drew[/LINK]'s "The Real Australians Say Welcome" project.
16. Apply to become an Australian citizen.
17. Spend the whole day practising peace by meditating and be mindful all day.
18. Read psychologist Marshall Rosenberg book about Nonviolent Communication (NVC).
19. Take up an artisan craft which one of your ancestors used to partake in, such a woodworking, sign writing, knitting or crochet.
20. Challenge yourself to walk up your nearest high mountain and then celebrate with bunch when you get home.
21. Plant some native trees in your garden to attract birds like bottlebrushes and wattles.
22. Research your ancestors to see if they took part in the war via the
The State Library of Queensland 's website . Your local library has free access to a number of genealogical websites.
23. Teach your children how to fish or another skill you learnt when you were their age.
24. Post a symbol or message of peace on your social media accounts and then turn off your phone and computer for the rest of the day.
25. For those people who like to follow tradition, you could join the Dawn Service at the Brisbane Shrine of Remembrance followed by the ANZAC Day Parade.
I hope you have a relaxing ANZAC day however you decide to mark the day.
