I'm always on the lookout for what type of accommodation could potentially become available, so if ever there is some sort of "offer" on, I'll have some sort of idea if the place would suit me or not. So when my brother was down from Darwin, I couldn't resist the opportunity to take a look at his apartment Quest SXY in South Yarra. He's part of what the hospitality industry refer to as the "Corporates", those people who have their expenses paid by their employer. There is a whole swathe of these mobile professionals whose skills are deployed by their companies in different locations both world wide and in Australia.

He was staying an a 1 Bedroom Executive Apartment with Balcony - very nice and after consulting the website , I can say it was also very expensive. The balcony however was very small, although it did support a small table and 4 chairs, perhaps it's used more for smoking

So in review how did I find the apartment using the 3 markers of luxury, security and location, I offer the following findings:-

A sense of luxury - the apartment has all the amenities, it is very clean and according to my brother, very warm. It is also airy and bright, so if you were coming to stay in Melbourne for an extended period it would be good, however for an overnight leisure stay over, I don't think it provides me with the sense of something special, at least not enough to warrant the large outlay.

A sense of security - the website talks about 24 hours management but it also lists list the hours of "7am-11pm, 7 days a week" which must be referring to the reception desk being staffed. When we entered the building there were two automatic sliding doors on either side of a post, both opened automatically which was bit weird and I'm not sure that it enhances security having double the number of doors opening at any one time.

A sense of place - as a franchise hotel I didn't feel the sense in these apartments as being in unique, however the advantage of location was very clear being so close to the train station, in fact next to it was a lane way that had cafes and bars, that took you straight through to the railway line after which is was only a short walk to the station.

Would I go there? As a local it doesn't give me the advantages that staying in the city does.
