If you are staying in Brisbane for the Queen's birthday long weekend but still want a break from the rat race, here are some options that will help you feel that you've done something different.

If you thought tree climbing was just for kids.... think again. Tree Climbers Australia runs courses in tree climbing and the chance to try rope and harness style climbing in a variety of parks around Brisbane. On Sunday 9 June you can join the Tree Climbers for some free Recreational Tree Climbing at Holland Park. Please phone Tree Climbers 0405 756 456 reserve your place. Why not learn how to design, build and manage a seasonal, no dig garden bed. The Pocket Community Garden at Preston St. Woollongabba is running a workshop on Sunday 9 June. This event is free but bookings are required. Please ring Claire Ward 0403 935 014 or see the website .


On Sunday 9 June you can enjoy a guided interpretive walk at Boondall Wetlands. All walks are guided by volunteers and are free but you must call 07 3403 1490 to make a booking.

Why not head to the Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens. In addition to being able to wander around these beautiful gardens there will be a number of special events on. There are more details on the website but here are some of the highlights.

Sculptors Queensland is holding an indoor and outdoor exhibition that runs until Monday 10 June.



On Saturday 8th June the Cactus and Succulent Society of Queensland is holding a display and competition in the auditorium. Plants will also be on sale and members of the group will be there to answer your cacti related questions.



Join the World Environment Day activities on Sunday 9 June. The artist in residence, Donna Davis, will lead you in a workshop to create a collage out of found materials. This workshop is free and no bookings are required.



Don't forget about the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium which has several great movies on offer, from Black Holes, Cosmic Collisions and Dynamic Earth.
