My only experiences with in Carlton have been positive. The place itself has an outside drinking area, perfect for a daytime lunch or a balmy night drink.



There is a downstairs area which more often than not has a live band or musician and an upstairs area which either has live music or on Thursday nights a DJ getting people onto the dance floor with tunes. The interior is just like any other Irish pub, it's the atmosphere that makes the difference.

Pugg's is the place to be for all ages. Thursday nights hosts a night commonly known as student's night but every other night of the week you can find something there. Live Sport is played there most nights as well. Like I said, something to be found here for everyone.

The food is classic pub food. It's all reasonably priced, the pizza is $9.50 and the parma is $18, and take it from experience - it's good.

Now to what everyone wants to know about, the drinks. I feel that Puggs has some of the most reasonably priced drinks in Melbourne. On Uni nights they are priced ridiculously fairly, $5 specials from 9pm. Drinks are generally around the $6/7 dollar mark.

As a University of Melbourne student, Pugg Mahones holds a special place in my broke uni student heart. Every single time I've walked in there, I've felt like a member of the cast of Cheers. Everyone knows my name. Well maybe not everyone, but there's always someone there that I know.

The bartenders and owners are fabulously friendly as is everyone that goes there. My favourite memory of Pugg's is being there on St. Patrick's Day when Irish drinks were flowing, everyone was dressed in green and the people were merry.

It's ridiculously easy to access, you could even make it a brisk walk from Melbourne Central. Alternatively, hop on either the number 1 or 8 trams and Pugg's is on the corner of Elgin St at number 171-175. It's hard to miss.

Puggs is just one of those places where you can go with one or two friends, a huge group or even by yourself, and you just know that you're going to have a good time. My advice, grab some friends and head down there to celebrate the weekend.
