Oh, definitely effective :) I actually quite like Hunger Games, I'm just sick of all the hype!

I wouldn't recommend anyone new to the series start with this one. That's exactly what I did and at first I thought the novella was awful and I couldn't understand why the series was getting so much acclaim. Now that I've read the other books I get it, but this one definitely isn't his best.

Stephen King's more serious novels like The Green Mile, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, and The Body (which filmed as Stand by Me) make excellent adaptations, and I've heard really good things about We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Though not necessarily a 'humourous' novel by definition, the last book that made me laugh out loud was Slam by Nick Hornby. Like most of Hornby's novels, it was full of those comical observations that make you go, 'It's funny cause it's true!"

Not the most mature approach, but I deal with it by closing my eyes, sticking my fingers in my ears, and saying, 'Blah blah blah I can't hear you!' every time it comes up.

You're right Carol, this is quite a powerful story and one definitely worth reading but ugh, I hated the mum so much!

This was my favourite thing to do when I was a child! My brother and I could spend hours running along the boardwalk, and I think our parents were pretty happy that we were so easily (and cheaply) amused.
