Private Peaceful, based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Michael Morpurgo (author of the celebrated War Horse), recalls the experiences of Thomas "Tommo" Peaceful (George MacKay).

This tale of heartbreak, tragedy and conflict begins with the idyllic days of Tommo and his brother Charlie's (Jack O'Connell) childhood. Both brothers are smitten by Molly (Alexandra Roach) and the trio swiftly become friends and share many adventures together.

As the years past, Charlie and Molly grow close to one another and begin to develop a romantic relationship, she eventually falls pregnant and the two hastily marry in the village church. The revelation leaves Tommo heartbroken.

Soon after, Tommo lies about his age so he can head to Belgium and fight in World War I. A guilt ridden Charlie also enlists, so he can protect his younger sibling. However on the battle lines they are confronted with the much despised Sergeant "Horrible" Hanley (John Lynch) and are forced to come face to face with the true atrocities of war.

Under Pat O'Connor's direction, this classic tale of the undying bond between two brothers is engaging and heartfelt. The cast is also remarkable; Frances de la Tour stars as 'Grandma Wolf' and the late Richard Griffiths is 'The Colonel' - it would be his final major role.

Private Peaceful is a quiet and unassuming film in comparison with the sweeping Steven Spielberg epic, War Horse, but it is still greatly affecting.
