There are markets galore in our fair city, with each one bringing something unique to Melbourne and its people. Prahran Market in South Yarra is renowned as the "food lovers' market" because of its high-end products (as well as a big range of everyday foods), food specialties, and numerous foodie events and activities. If you're seriously into seriously good food and its associated culture, a stop at Prahran market is considered essential.

The oldest continuously running market in Australia (operating since 1864), it's home to some legendary stallholders, like 'the potato man', who stocks every type of potato imaginable and has an unmatched knowledge of the now not-so-humble spud, which has risen to an elevated status through almost 4,000 varieties worldwide. Here are some of our most common ones and their uses. The Dutch Cream is my favourite at the moment.

The deli section is simply sensational, with plenty of tastes representing all corners of the culinary globe. Think dips and delicacies, breads and burek, salamis and sausages. There's home-made pasta, cheeses and fabulous chocolates. There's also the Market Square, where you can buy food to enjoy while sitting al fresco and enjoying some entertainment.

If you want to grab yourself some bargains, Saturday afternoon is the time to nab $1 bags of very good fruit and veggies and well-priced trays of fish and meat. The 4.30pm auction at Claringbolds, renowned fishmonger for rare and spectacular seafood, is famous and most definitely fabulous. I also love Jimmy and Maria's seafood directly opposite (and their prices are cheaper).

Get an idea of the extent of the market's offerings here and do check out the food-related events.
