A little bit of beauty goes a long, long way, and a visit to will restore a garden lover's soul at any time of year. Rising up from the banks of the Maribyrnong River, the nursery peaks at the Boulevard Café and features two shops of homewares within the meandering complex of greenery and colour. I lost three happy hours here over morning tea and shopping with a friend, and three more hours wouldn't have gone astray, so if you are into coffee days, not coffee dates, Poyntons is made for you.

Extensive, superior and satisfying, the nursery and garden centre is well-stocked with top quality specimens and jigged for seasonal readiness to prompt all wannabe gardeners from the highly adept to the embarrassingly clueless. Expertise is on hand with knowledgeable nursery staff ready to answer questions and offer professional advice. Pots and punnets are just that dollar or so more than elsewhere, but the standard is convincingly amplified beyond this extra spend and more likely to continue to please into the future.

At 9.30am on a sunny Monday the café was busy and breakfasting. I got the feeling Poyntons is a favourite stop for riverside walkers. The menu has plenty of choice with breakfast from $5.00 for handmade toasted bread to $18 for a big cooked breakfast. Light lunches are under $10 or main meals are $18-$33 and, again, there is variety enough to satisfy most, including a daily menu of specials. A children's menu for $9.50 welcomes families and a full beverage license allows for special occasions too.

Exploring the homewares on hand was particularly joyous and if you are a perennial interior decorator, self-styled and looking to spruce up your rooms with all things beautiful and useful, Poyntons is worthy of you. Loosely categorised into an outdoor living shop and an interior design shop, the distinction is unimportant, except to say that there is a stylish array of colour, giftware and trimmings in both spaces – one perhaps more provincially themed, including furniture and soft calming tones. Staff are friendly and well used to browsers, but I identified my purchase at ten paces and plans are certainly already made to return.

Beauty and inspiration come for free in this haven of home making abundance, a family business that has staked a claim as a local favourite. Stock your garden for the rewards of seasons ahead. Treat your home to a whole new look. Pick up a gift for someone special. Enjoy a moment of respite over a meal. Do it all at and the chances are, you'll also take away a memorable day.
