Located under the capital's elevated Westway dual-carriageway in west London, the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema is a delightful outdoor affair. Calling itself a "digital microplex cinema", the non-profit group puts on a vast range of movie-related events throughout the summer.

Indeed, the variety and originality of the events is the beauty of this particular cinema.

Here are a few examples, to give you a flavour of what you can expect....

the Cycle-In Cinema (31st July) - a fantastic twist on the better-known drive-in cinema where you harness the energy generated by your cycling to power the projector. Twenty bicycles are required in order the crank up the projector - if someone stops, the movie stops. So don't let the other members of the audience down and be sure to keep pedalling.
As you're putting in the legwork, you won't need to pay to watch the movie.

Westway Motorway Art Crash (Part 1) (4th August) - a celebration of the iconic Westway dual-carriageway, with filmmakers, local historians and writers. The evening includes rarely-seen documentary films, photos and special readings, all related to the wonderful Westway.

Withnail & I (6th August) - oh yes, they show regular movies too!

Notting Hill in the 60s (11th August) - enjoy photographs and a documentary telling the story of this exciting part of London. Photos are courtesy of the renowned urban photographer Charlie Phillips.

The Cinema Museum presents an Evening of Attractions (17th August) - this event involves an intriguing mix of rarely seen silent films, various movie clips and a number of film shorts.

Tickets cost £4 and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. The cinema asks you to judge for yourself if you think a particular movie is going to bring in a lot of punters, in which case, get there early!
