Port Melbourne Dog Beach

Now that summer is here and the heat is upon us, I don't think anyone is feeling it more than our dog. Usually a bundle of energy, he now spends most of the day stretched out on the cool floorboards, usually in places where people are bound to trip over him. Feeling sorry for him, last weekend I jumped on the internet seeking a dog friendly beach he could cool off at, and came across
Port Phillip Council's guide to dog friendly beaches in the area.
In the summer season (1 November-31 March), dogs are only allowed on certain beaches, but the bonus is that most of these have off-leash areas. As long as your dog is under effective voice control and you have a leash with you, your dog is free to run and play to their heart's content. This
map shows all the nominated beaches in the Port Phillip area. We chose to head to Port Melbourne Beach, where our four-legged friend was welcome between Lagoon Pier and northwest along to the bottom of Bay Street. Pure unadulterated joy ensued, as we discovered that plenty of other dog owners had the same idea. The area is also very owner-friendly, as there's lots of great cafes along Bay Street.
Off leash activities are always restricted to specific areas and often at specific times, so it's a good idea to read the signs carefully before you enter the beach. It's also a requirement to take along some plastic bags to ensure your dog leaves only footprints. And from my personal experience, take a towel - it's a long drive home with a sandy, wet dog next to you.
