If you are serious about cinema, you ought to know about Popcorn Taxi - where not only do you have the chance to attend special screenings of cult classics, as well as new feature films, but also the chance to meet the filmmakers!

In 1999 Popcorn Taxi was founded by independent filmmakers Gary Doust and Matt Wheeldon.

The purpose of Popcorn Taxi was to promote a film culture in Australia and to create special events which would delve into the filmmaking process and allow Australian film enthusiasts to attend special screenings and participate in Q&A's with some of the leading national and international talents in the industry.

In the past decade Popcorn Taxi have presented some pretty spectacular events - from screening remastered cult classics, such as Mad Max, Dogs in Space, Blade Runner: The Final Cut and The Man From Hong Kong to premier events, such as hosting the first Australian theatrical screenings of Wall-E, Frost/Nixon, Moon and Southland Tales - with each screening followed with a live Q&A with the audience, either with the director/s and/or actors via a link-up or on stage.

Special guests who have made the trip down-under and participated in Popcorn Taxi events in recent years include Kevin Smith, Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Phillip Noyce, Jerry Lewis, Joss Whedon, George Miller, Roger Corman, Richard Linklater, Philip Glass, Ewan McGreggor, Danny Boyle and the late Dennis Hopper.

Such special events sell incredibly quickly (like the upcoming Back to the Future 25th Anniversary screening), so to be in the know - become a friend of the Popcorn Taxi Facebook, and check-out Popcorn Taxi Twitter.

Still, if you did miss out on an event - check out the archive on the Popcorn Taxi website - to view pictures of the past events or stream the Q&A's of selected events.

The first event of 2011, certainly does not lack anticipation - it involves none other than James Cameron and a special screening of the action-thriller - Sanctum 3D at Event Cinemas, Bondi Junction, NSW.

(From the press notes it seems the interview with producer Andrew Wight, director Alister Grierson and executive producer Cameron may have been pre-recorded).

The Popcorn Taxi events are held predominately in Sydney, but there have been events exclusive to Melbourne, in a range of venues including ACMI, Cinema Nova, RMIT Capital Theatre and The Astor Theatre. Sydney events have taken place at Event Cinemas, Bondi Junction, Sydney Opera House Concert Hall and Randwick Ritz Cinemas.
