Luxury. It's a funny thing. Sometimes we want it, strive for it, do everything in our power to achieve it. Other times, we actively seek to not have it. In fact, some people don't want luxury, don't see it as 'authentic'. Polly is a place that fully embraces the idea of luxury, and makes no apologies for it. However, in comparison to other places, such as Ra Cigar Bar and most inner-city trendy bars, Polly balances opulence with a sense of friendliness and comfort.
Situated on Brunswick St, Polly makes an instant impact even before you get there. Looking up the bar's position, one can see that it is not quite in the main bars/pubs section of Fitzroy. Lying just outside of the main strip allows Polly to stand out.
First impressions when you get to the bar are also great. A small tree-lined alcove has been cut out of the front of the bar, replete with statues, ferns and stone seats. For the opening salvo of any bar, this one certianly packs an impressive punch.
Work your way inside, and take a seat on any of the plush leather couches available. The second-first impression of the inside of the bar is equally impressive. Reds dominate the walls, and the seats and tables, while seeming very random, give the dark and musky room an off-kilter feeling.
Table service is offered, and is quite good. Efficient, fast, and knowing, the bartenders know how to make a damn good cocktail. A massive list of these cocktails greets you in the drinks menu, and while expensive, absoutely deserves all the attention it gets. Try the absinthes as well, if you're feeling adventurous: Polly specialises in absinthes from the world over, and you can't go there without trying at least one. Same goes for the cigars, if you're that way inclined.
Polly practically begs you to enjoy it, with its plush interior, powerful drinks and great service. Luxurious this bar is, but pretentious it is not.
