Surf's Up - Photo by Mikebaird
Surf's up, or maybe surf's down. It doesn't matter, really. You're ultimately in control of what you get up to at Point Leo Surf Beach.
Just don't kid yourself into thinking you can also control the size, frequency and amplitude of the waves here. Unfortunately you'll just have to wait for the day when the waves adjust themselves to your desired category. However, if you're impatient, try to find out from the locals who frequent the beach, just what part to visit according to your surfing skill. Point Leo Surf Beach is more or less tailored to suit just about any and every swimmer. Don't give the life savers a headache. Make sure that you swim between the flags, regardless of how professional you think you are.
Should you wish to upgrade your surfer abilities,
The East Coast Surf School are there to meet that need, whether you intend to be an amateur surfer or have a dream of one day participating in the professional
surfing competitions in Hawaii.
Surfing may not be for everyone; I know that it isn't for me, but maybe one day if time and circumstances permit. But if you can't be bothered waxing your board to keep you surfing, or you just don't have that balancing act in you (that's the hardest part of mastering the sport), simply jump off and get yourself a boogie board. Now, those things I am really into. I mean, come on, who can't boogie board? I suppose if you claim, "But I can't boogie board to save my life," then leave it in the hands of the life savers. Only don't go back in for a second attempt.
Be careful when you catch a wave with a boogie board down at Point Leo Surf Beach. Depending on which part of the coast you decide to ride the sea, it will obviously be more treacherous in some areas than in others. That's just the way the waves roll and how the breakers break. You might travel faster when getting carried by waves in some parts of the coast, so please watch out for other swimmers and unexpectedly huge rocks on the ocean floor.
It might be a great idea to explore the areas you intend to boogie board prior to engaging the fury of the sea. Scour the waters, and look for any visible objects that could boogie-wreck you (cf. Shipwreck).
Feel the floor of the sea. Is there going to be anything sharp that may slice you up when you're travelling at unforeseen speeds? Go with your heart. If you have any misgivings at all about boogie boarding in a certain area, move to some place else. Above all, ask the local swimmers, surfers and boogie boarders who know the parts of the coast probably as well as you know your bedroom.
This beach might be very different to most beaches. What I mean is, how many times have you gone to a beach and there's a larger than life sign – with an illustrative diagram of a tent in a circle with a red slash through it – that says, "No Camping"?
You've probably seen it countless times. And all
camping enthusiasts have most likely sighed at the sign more times than what you've laid eyes on it.
After all, pitching your tent at the beach and laying beneath the stars and listening to the gentle roar of the waves coming through would be a unique experience, wouldn't it? No city pollution is equated with a lot more visible stars, too. Imagine that scenery for a moment, then read this.
Well, there's some wonderful news down at Point Leo Surf Beach: The place has approximately 180 campsites. Obviously, the highly memorable experiences described in the previous paragraph are spectacularly popular, meaning that you must book more than half a year in advance to camp there during summer.
