Some sort of Mayan predicted, many years ago, that in 2012 the world was going to end. Despite, personally, never having met an honest Mayan, this idea has taken flight and gained a foothold in popular consciousness. So what if this, alleged, liar of a Mayan was right? Where is the best place to survive the end of the world in Melbourne? What characteristics make one location better better equipped for survival than another? These are all good questions and all very relevant given the potential impending (probably-not) doom.

Rays Tent City- 592 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne

"Gear up!"

Nestled just outside the City, Rays Tent City, is an oasis of survival equipment, freeze dried food and knives.

The building, situated on Elizabeth Street just north of the city, is a highly secured compound, designed to keep the riff-raff out and the expensive equipment in. This building is perfectly designed to keep out hordes of rampaging thieves, post-apocalypse, or prior for that matter.

Although I cant tell you exactly how you are going to get inside this compound, I can give you a single hint: One of the workers, who may or may not have a set of keys, lives in, or near, Richmond…. I've said too much.
Police stables, Grant & Dodds Street, South Melbourne

"Giddy up"

You can't drive a petrol fuelled car post apocalypse: the freeways are strewn with bodies! Cars block the entrance to EastLink! Petrol stations are burning! You need a method of transport that runs on grass and will kick attackers in the face! Enter the humble Police Horse, it wont back down from the deranged masses, now rampaging across the streets of post apocalyptic Melbourne.

These horses have been practising for years for the apocalypse, these four-hoofed, short-mane-sporting bulldozers are you new best friends. They are also housed in a solid brick (read fire-rain resistant) castle/shed, which is situated a short trot from two supermarkets and three fine art galleries (ACCA, across the road; Vca, across the street; NGV, down the way).

One of the great things about the Apocalypse is that now there is no one in these amazing Art Gallery's wearing empty lens glasses telling you that your not allowed to bring your horse inside or shush you when your horse kicks down a wall. The bad thing about the apocalypse is that these galleries will never change their exhibitions again, ever. Also, that most of the people that you know are now probably dead. Ah, c'est la vie.

Abbotsford Convent

"Castle up"

Now that you have the necessary equipment and transport, it is essential for your own survival that you obtain some sort of Headquarters. Abbotsford Convent is the place for you! Whether you are of the mind to re-establish some sort of utopian society, living off the land and caring for fellow survivors in a sort of Yarra-side nirvana, or, possibly, of the mind just to hide out, look after number-one and see what happens next: Abbotsford Convent is your ace in the hole.

For one thing it is located next to a children's-farm full of tame animals, read entertainment and back-up food supply. Within the grounds there are around fourteen different stately-mansions to choose from, all with Yarra frontage.

Also, depending on your own personal coping mechanism for dealing with the Apocalypse, Abbotsford Convent has a chapel - for any big questions you might have - and an industrial school of mechanical design - for any small solutions you may wish to create.

Note : The three locations listed above are also nice to visit during the pre-apocalypse.
