Guidebooks usually devote a section to unique local food customs. Visitors to Australia are told to have a roast dinner, eat a meat pie and drink some flavoured milk, but one of our most common cultural traditions doesn't even get a mention. The sausage sizzle has been overlooked.

You can find them any weekend outside Bunnings, Harvey Norman and similar stores, or at local fetes and sports carnivals, but where is Perth's best sausage sizzle?

The Rules
All contests need rules, so here are mine:

1.Must be outdoors so the aroma of frying onions can draw people from miles around

2.Must be a fundraiser so you don't feel guilty about eating a less-than-healthy treat

Ingredients
As I researched this article I realised that the sausage sizzle has gone upmarket. Years ago a charred thin sausage was plopped diagonally on a piece of white bread then covered with onions and tomato sauce.

Now the hot dog roll is king and many sizzles offer gourmet snags with toppings including sweet chili sauce, sauerkraut, American mustard and more.

Nevertheless, the minimum requirements for this test are sausages, bread, onions and sauce.

Runner up
Whether it's for the Scouts, tee ball, Rotary or any one of dozens of local groups, the weekly Bunnings sausage sizzle ticks all the boxes. Soft rolls, browned onions and properly cooked snags with a choice of tomato or BBQ sauce and mustard make a great late breakfast, all for about $2.50. Score 4/5

The Winner
Only the most dedicated fundraisers would build a sausage sizzle van, but that's exactly what the Kalamunda Rotary club has done.

The Snagger Wagon makes an appearance at the Kalamunda Village Markets held on the first Saturday of every month. Though the usual snags are available, my favourite is the bratwurst with onion, sauerkraut, tomato sauce and mustard.

At $6 it's expensive, but It takes two hands to eat this delicious creation and it's great fuel for an hour or two walking around the markets.
Score 5/5

So what do you think? Have you found Perth's best sausage sizzle? If so what's the cause, and how good is the sizzle? Let us know in the comments.
