As we were queuing up to get into the zoo at the indecently early time of 7am, I told my daughters that we were having breakfast at the zoo. 'I wonder what we will be having,' asked the six year old.'Well, you will eat what the animals eat,' I told her. 'Grass, insects and raw fish.'The look on her face was priceless.

Luckily for them, the VIP Member Breakfast at Perth Zoo provides human food (in the form of a bacon and egg roll) plus a large bottle of juice. Grass and insects are optional and you need to find your own.

Held every year, this special event is only available to Zoo Friend Members, but judging by the numbers which attended in 2013 (which is a sell-out every year), there are a lot of families who support this great Institution. But considering that an annual membership for adults (with unlimited entry) is only $90, and children between 4 and 15 years are $53 (less if more than one person in a family has joined), it is exceptional value.

The Member Breakfast is an opportunity to visit the zoo before it normally opens, although early access is restricted to the main grassed area. And just in case you think you can duck under the ropes and explore the zoo before hours, they hire some pretty serious-looking security people to prevent break-ins. I asked one of them if they ever need to crash-tackle a runaway toddler determined to get to the new playground. She smiled and said usually the parents get to them first.

Everything is included in the ticket price of $12 and as well as your breakfast and free gift, activities include:
  • Up close and personal visits with reptiles (if you're brave, you can pat the snake)
  • Mini golf
  • Face painting
  • Sports and games
  • Electronic ride-on animals
  • Free rides on the Perth Zoo carousel
  • And the grand dame of the zoo herself, Tricia the elephant, comes for a very special appearance.

  • Despite the sheer numbers of families who attend the Member breakfast, there are plenty of activities and my best hint is to simply join the shortest queue and not be fooled into joining the longest one simply because everyone else is.

If you have more than one adult in your group, send one to collect the juice and rolls (you will receive coupons upon entry) while the kids line up for face painting or mini-golf.

Entry is via gate 1 on Labouchere Road, not through the main entrance, so the best place to park is the public carbays down on Labouchere. It's a very long walk if you park near the Bowls Club or behind the zoo on Mill Point Road.

Bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen and a picnic blanket. Once the breakfast is over and the zoo is open, you are free to stay as long as you like.

The Zoo Member Breakfast is just one of the many VIP activities that are on offer during the year and makes a Zoo Friends Membership even better value.
