Look out for the old brick manor that signals you've found Penny's Hill Winery next time you're in the McLaren Vale region. You'll find everything you need for a good wine experience, high quality wines, an award winning restaurant, and some beautiful surroundings.

At the Penny's Hill Cellar Door you'll get to try some of their well known wines for free, with the free tastings on offer. If you find something that you particularly like you can choose to enjoy a full glass of it, or buy a bottle to enjoy at home. There are special savings and deals when you purchase from the Cellar Door, especially if you're buying in the dozen.

The Cellar Door is a cosy area inside a huge tin shed. With Persian carpets and comfy sofas Penny's Hill have created an inviting location where you feel comfortable to just sit and chat while you enjoy their wines. If you do sit down to have a glass or two, then you can also order a tapas tasting platter, created to complement the wines on offer. You can also browse through the gallery to see some of the art works on show.

The Kitchen Door

If you are feeling a bit peckish while visiting the winery, then you cannot go past The Kitchen Door. The prices here are high, but thankfully so is the quality of the food. The Kitchen Door operates on a seasonal menu, selecting the best local produce to make food that suits the season perfectly.

In winter expect hearty meals, that warm you from the inside out, and in summer you'll enjoy lighter meals that sit pleasantly in the warm weather. The Kitchen Door area once again follows the elegant but simple decor of the Cellar Door, with Persian rugs and simple settings, and a view of the blossoms and sheep grazing in the paddock. To finish off your meal you can also choose from the Kitchen Door's range of desserts.

The Kitchen Door isn't in everyone's price range, especially if you're bringing the kids along too. If this is the case then bring along a picnic and enjoy this with some wine. There are outdoor tables set up, or you can head to the undercover picnic area. Kids will love being able to run around outside, where they can also get a good view of the sheep and lambs. Pick up some local produce to add to your picnic to make the most of your McLaren Vale experience.

Penny's Hill is a winery where you could easily spend a few hours, sitting and chatting over a glass of wine, or tucking into a scrumptious meal. The menu is interesting and inspired, with some options that may not suit everyone's tastes. Penny's Hill would be a great addition to any winery tour, but would also be a great standalone escape from the city.
