Penny Farthing Espresso

Northcote is a interesting place. Having only discovered the area independently two years ago, I still consider it to be a somewhat untouched area. Why? The hipsters are in their natural habitat, locals go about doing their local things and the tourists gravitate towards things that look familiar.

Penny Farthing Espresso is a place you must go to. Thick black framed glasses. Apple products. Life advice given by people with motorcycle helmets tucked under their arms. All the baristas have some form form of facial hair. All the girls behind the counter have an elegant vintage look to their attire and presentation. I love it.

Not only is Penny Farthing Espresso a gourmet picnic for the eyes, it is a feast for the palate too.

Double espresso. Brazilian. Minas Gerais
I'm not one to (often) use crass language and pepper my sentences with curse words but this serving of nectar was amazing. Extremely smooth. Very low acidity. It had a type of oiliness that coated my mouth and tongue. It wasn't a sickly oiliness, but perhaps an oiliness that is associated with hazelnuts. There were dark and wonderful flavours in this cup that persuaded me to have another serving.

Roasted pumpkin sandwich
Fantastically light and tasty. The pumpkin was seasoned well and soft enough to combine itself well with its co-stars that it shared the bread with.

The staff are lovely, attractive and polite. So with great food, great coffee and great staff how can you go wrong?
Well, you can't go wrong, that's how you don't go wrong here. Understand? Look at me when I'm talking to you OK?

The large communal table at the front of the store is a great place to sit and watch the maestro's behind the counter. Or if that's not your fancy, turn around and watch all that High Street has to offer. If that still isn't your 'thing' there is the quiet courtyard at the back. There isn't that much room for prams inside the front, at the back of the cafe there is potentially some room though it may be a bit of a wrestle. You could always sit outside the front of the shop and take in the fresh air as well as everything else.

Did I mention how good the coffee was?

Chris, you do such a thorough write-up of the cafes you go to, I feel truly confident that you won't lead me astray - thanks.
I think the only thing this was missing was pictures of these attractive staff members - but I guess maybe that's a good draw-card for people to go out there.
This looks amazing. It's not close to me, but looks like it could be worth a weekend trip out to Northcote :) It's a nice suburb, not quite leached onto by the hipsters yet, you're right. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Thank you Sam. I will not misguide anyone about good coffee and food as I'll only be misguiding myself as well.
Northcote isn't 'that' close for me either, however, I'll always make the trek through Bell street just to give my palate a ride on the Penny Farthing Espresso (that sounded strange...).
