Local Artist's Profiles

As promised in my earlier article (refer Peninsula Studio Trail ), here is a profile of each artist and their work. The intention is to give you a more in depth feeling for what the Open Weekend will offer you and to open the doorway to some of the works of those very generous artists who opened their homes and their studios to me after only a brief telephone introduction

The order in which I present these artists is simply the order in which I visited them, following the trail from Frankston to South Frankston to Mt Eliza and on to Mornington. From here the trail went to Moorooduc to Balnarring and on to Red Hill, Rosebud West and finally to St Andrews Beach. I trust you will enjoy getting to know these artists and their works in a little more detail just as I did

Please note that the captions under the artwork shown are for the purpose of this article only and are my interpretation as I found it difficult to capture the artists' titles while attempting to achieve the best photographs.
Jeff Gilmore 0439 502 427

From an early career with Woman's Day and Australasian Post and after various positions with TV Week and New Idea, Jeff embarked on what was to become a successful freelance business with clients such as Myer, CN Meyer and Landsdown Press. Jeff was introduced to fine art when, after moving back to Frankston, he met and married Joan Denner. They are both multiple award winners and work from their "Crabapple Gallery" at 27 Gairloch Drive in Frankston. Jeff's talent has been acknowledged in numerous awards for pastels, water colour and oils.

Joan Denner 0439 502 427

Melbourne born Joan studied painting at Mitcham Art Society and then privately with Marjorie Martin before she relocated to the UK where she won several awards in South Devon and sold many of her paintings to various parts of the globe. On her return to her native born country, she married Jeff and continued to receive art tuition. She has been winning awards since 1983 and continues to do so. Rosie Barber 9775 4852

From her childhood days in Sorrento when it was just a coastal village, Rosie has been tuned in to its ever changing moods: that ability to move between tranquillity and vibrancy. For her, everyday told a different story.

Although Rosie has worked with various mediums, including porcelain and ceramics, she now favours painting in oils as she feels that it has the ability to provide greater flexibility and definition and interprets the mood of her subject more effectively. She also fervently believes that Art reflects the personality and style of the purchaser and should complement the statement they wish to make.

To see more of Rosie's work visit her in Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza or on line: www.rosiebarber.com.au
Note: Rosie is holding an exhibition of her work at the Mitchelton Winery, Nagambie (90minutes north of Melbourne) from January 16th through to Sunday 4th March. Watch for further details on Weekend Notes.

Margo Vigorito 0410 280 711

Margo makes the statement I live my passion to create art. Her primary goal is to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. Even after winning numerous awards and almost a lifetime of creating, Margo still feels excited each time she begins a new painting, rarely knowing what will come from the end of her brush. She paints instinctively, but always holds a respect for the design elements so ingrained in her.

As an artist and teacher, her passion and her personality have been evident in her successes and you can read a part of Margo in every painting. Her 12 years in the USA expanded her skills and stretched her imagination considerably, giving her the added opportunity of contributing much more to her students as a workshop instructor.

Margo's work is strongly influenced by portraits and landscapes and colour is her driving force. Colour makes the shape and shapes make the painting says Margo who likes to work many layers deep whether with acrylics, pastels or oils. A multiple award winner, she has submitted her work to the Archibald Prize for Portraiture three times and has been accepted into the Salon de Refusee in Melbourne on each occasion.

Margo's work can be viewed at her studio at 2/14 Rodney Court, Mornington or on line: www.margovigorito.com.au

Anita Josefsson 0417 553 537

Anita's career in television was preceded by dance and vocal training along with formal studies at the Hobart Technical College. Once in Melbourne she was admitted to the National Theatre Drama School and the Melba Conservatorium of Music. Through her choreographic work, Anita's interest in drawing was re-ignited seeing her finally give up concert work to follow her love of art. Her popular figurative work and her passion for rich colours are evident in her works. After several portraits (Pope Benedict & Shapelle Corby, ) her latest paintings have seen a return to seascapes, mostly featuring Mornington Harbour.

Anita has received tuition from, among many others, Margo Vigorito in whose Mornington studio she currently has several paintings on display. Visit her at: Tower Studio, Sutton Grange, 3/14 Tanti Ave. Mornington (please ring first)

Judy Reekie 0417 553 537

Born and educated in Tasmania, Judy first tried her hand at nursing. On her move to Melbourne she continued her nursing career while raising a family and continuing her studies. Later a career change saw her run a successful consulting business in occupational health and safety.

Judy's love of drawing and painting began when she was just a child and it took until adulthood before she attempted anything in a formal sense. When studying with the late John Balmain (in oils) followed by a brief period with pastels, Judy's understanding of the application of art was awakened, thus allowing her observations of colour, tone, perspective and composition to make sense.

However Judy's forte is watercolour and mixing water, pigment and paper still holds magic for her. As she's now retired from the workforce, Judy paints most days, but there were times when her commitment to family responsibilities and running a business took precedence over her painting. Having been tutored by several notable water-colourists, Judy still draws on them for her inspiration.

She maintains a traditional stylist and holds firmly to her dream of one day emulating some of Australia's wonderful watercolour artists. Judy has exhibited around Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and Tasmania and has memberships to the Sherbrooke Art Society, Oak Hill Gallery and the Peninsula Art Society.

Visit Judy's studio at 67 Loders Rd, Moorooduc.
Just call to make an appointment.

Greer Allica 0411 724 226

Beginning her artistic career as a writer Greer has published books on poetry, short stories, children's language, Indonesian massage, travel, meditation and self-help. To complement her writing, Greer turned her hand to painting, developing skills in water colour, life drawing, charcoal, pastel and paint. She then experimented with different media and collage before branching into abstract acrylic works and has more recently experimented with printmaking.

Greer aims to be freer and more heart-centred with her art, resulting in works full of passion and movement. While having many mentors over the years, Greer still aims to find her unique inner voice and to express it through form.

While a regular contributor to local art shows, Greer has also received painting commissions and has several pieces held in private collections in Victoria and interstate. She has exhibited often with many other artists as well as holding solo exhibitions and has an Art Original series of gift cards with each one portraying an original painting. Michael Leeworthy 0408 051 027

Michael is a seasoned and commissioned artist and works from his Red Hill Art Studio & Gallery at 133 Shoreham Road. His paintings, like his personality are spontaneous, inspired, amusing and beautiful. His work encompasses an extensive range of styles and he paints whatever transpires between his heart and the tip of his brush.

One of six children, Michael was born in Glenhuntly and left school aged 16 to become a Window Dresser. He went on to operate his own business for 20 years. He first exhibited at the Herald Outdoor Art Show in 1967. Apart from gaining further valuable insight working as an Interior Decorator & Designer, Michael studied at Moorabbin and Frankston Technical Colleges and attended numerous courses in art, life drawing, ceramics and stained glass. Michael is a frequent judge at local art shows, is a multi-award winner, has held many Exhibitions Solo and with other artists and was Artist in Residence at Manton's Creek Winery and Whitehill Gallery, Dromana. In 2008, he exhibited and sold at a special Australian Art Show in Belgium.

Many of Michael's works reside overseas in places such as England, Ireland, Spain, France, Singapore, China, Nigeria, Canada, New Zealand, Belgium, Holland and the USA and of course around Australia. Multi- talented Michael conducts private tuition and classes either from his studio or in your workplace and is available for Corporate Sessions for bonding or for just plain having fun. Please check out Michael's work at:- www.michaelleeworthy.com

Note: To find Michael's gallery, look for the wonderfully creative scarecrows, particularly the one that adorns the studio roof and another that surveys the surrounds from his favourite tree trunk opposite. The former has his binoculars trained on the sculpture of an elderly couple frolicking in a wine barrel-turned bath. The scarecrows are the work of Michael's obviously talented daughter Sarah, who studied at the Melbourne School of Fashion. She utilises the scarecrows as proxy models for her clothing designs.

Antoinette Bonnici 5986 6667

Maltese born Antoinette was raised in Port Melbourne during her very early years. Her drive to create was born out of her great affinity with water, earth and clay and that passion shows clearly in the boldness of her clay figures which, Antoinette reveals, represent various stages of her life.

Multi-talented and highly skilled at using multiple techniques with equal dexterity, she is an expert at coiling, texturing and slab building and has now combined textile and metal with her clay sculptures (along with a dash of her own unique imagination) to create some highly unusual and artistic pieces. When working with clay, she feels a great sense of oneness with the elements which she then expresses through her various pieces. She credits her maturity and self-confidence in technique for allowing her to go beyond the limits of what is ordinary, thus creating items of high interest.

The variety of objects in her figures represent the contents of our minds which are constantly exposed to our environment. She uses clay, metal, fibre and anything else she feels would help generate the expression in her creations. She is an enormous source of inspiration to her students and the people she meets in life.

Antoinette runs workshop for children five years and upwards. Kids in Clay allows children with their parents to create in clay and a week later to come back and paint the dried creation. Not content to let it rest there, Antoinette also runs Birthday Parties where the children experience the wonder of creating. For more on what's happening at The Mermaids Tale Sculpture Studio at 1567 Pt Nepean Rd, Rosebud West, go to: www.mermaids-tale.com.au

Bryan Baldwin (03) 5988 5651

Bryan graduated from Prahran College with a Diploma of Art and Design- in Industrial Design and has worked both as an Industrial Designer and as a Design Draftsman in a variety of different companies. However 2007 saw him pursue his art full time and he is now known for his breathtaking array of Mornington Peninsula seascapes. They clearly portray his love of the area's beautiful beaches and their ever-changing moods.

His talent in working with different mediums is evident in his work as he creates in oils, acrylics, pencil, pastel and sculpture. The incredibly vivid sunsets of the Australian Outback which Bryan was lucky enough to experience at the age of 14, inspired him to portray its colours and moods in his own paintings. His portfolio includes Murals, Theatrical Set Design, Illustrations and Corporate Imaging. To view Bryan's extensive and diverse range of art work, call to arrange a visit to Backorye - St Andrews Beach Studio Gallery, 290 Sandy Rd, Fingal

Jenni Macauley 0409 853 437

Jenni was tutored from the age of 12 by the well-respected Sydney artist, Nessie Tindale and showed an early talent for drawing. She later studied at the National Art School in East Sydney and has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer and creative director for several major advertising agencies in London, NSW and Victoria.

Like Bryan, whose studio currently displays her work, Jenni feels deeply about Australia's Outback having worked (while sketching and painting), as a Jillaroo for some time. Her work in recent times depicts modern landscape, botanical art, book illustration, theatre set design, painting in watercolour, gouache, acrylic and oils. Jenni now lives at St Andrews Beach on the peninsula and her emotional affinity with nature reflects in her current works as she displays the changing light of sea, sky and of landform. Jenni's work is represented in Japan, UK, Norway and the USA as well as throughout Australia.
