Ancient Romans made pancakes by heating batter in a pan over direct heat.
Today, there are a million ways to glam up the humble pancake, and there's no better place to enjoy them, than at
Pancakes at Carillon.
This gem of a restaurant is hidden away from the noisy streets of Perth City on Level 1,
Carillon City Arcade (Hay Street Mall End). It's the perfect place to escape the chaos and unwind, while the Pancakes at Carillon staff take you down the rabbit hole and treat you to a pancake experience like no other.
For breakfast, I recommend the Eggs Benedict - a freshly cooked pancake, topped with thin slices of fresh country ham, two eggs and warm homemade hollandaise sauce and hash browns on the side. It fills the belly, and is great incentive for getting out of bed on a cold morning.
If it's lunch you're after, there's a huge range of savoury crepes to tempt your palate, including my favourite 'Pocket Full of Chicken' - Pieces of tender skinless chicken breasts and fresh mushrooms in a creamy sauce, topped with fresh Parmesan cheese, their special tomato sauce and a generous dob of sour cream. The service is fast, so it's easy to fit a pancake fix into your lunch break, as long as you let the staff know you're on a time limit.
Now I'm not usually a sweet tooth, but once you see the pancake desserts of offer, you won't be able to refuse. On my last visit, I finally buckled and chose the Strawberry Jam Pancake (and oh so glad I did) with two fluffy buttermilk pancakes, drizzled with strawberry jam, and topped with cream AND ice cream.
Irresistable Strawberry Jam Pancakes
If pigs fly and you find you're not in the mood for pancakes, the chefs here can whip you up some nachos, salad, chips, burgers, or the perfect steak.
The best part about Pancakes at Carillon is the price. You get a restaurant quality meal, restaurant quality service, in a restaurant style venue, for the same price you might pay at a fast food take-away. So seriously folks of Perth, why would you force down a greasy burger and fries when this place is just an escalator ride away? Trust me, go there tomorrow for breakfast before work, or take a couple of friends for lunch. Even better, impress that stubborn client with a stack and a coffee - it won't cost you much, and at least the great food will help you forget about the poor company.
Pancakes at Carillon is also a very family-friendly restaurant. They expect you to make mess - 'cos hey, its pancakes, they're bound to get a little messy. So get comfortable, pour on the maple syrup, and see where evolution has taken the humble pancake. Check out the
menu and vouchers online now at the Pancakes at Carillon
