From the Brunswick East Project Cafe in Lygon comes a specialty coffee offshoot to tantalise the coffee taste buds of visitors to the South Melbourne Market. Padre operates a small cafe in the busy market, dishing out cup after cup of blended and single origin coffee.

With long queues at the cafe on weekends, I decided to drop by on a weekday to find out what all the Melbourne fuss was about.

Padre was nothing much to look at. It was economically designed to make best use of the limited stall space with beverage preparation and retail area. With seating limited to a few small round tables and a large communal table, takeaways were the preferred mode of consumption.

I sat down with a Padre blend latte which promised characteristics of almond, cocoa, toffee and malt. The milk-based coffee was smooth with tones of caramel which reminded me of the excellent brew at Market Lane in Queen Victoria Market (QVM) and Hush Expresso in Freo. This was far better coffee than the likes of Carlton's iconic Brunetti .

In addition to cups of java, Padre's retail area is filled with freshly roasted single origin and blended options to take home. There were 3 blends and 8 single origins during my visit that were far offered richer aromas than those I viewed at Coffea in QVM . The Padre blend and Daddy's Girl ended up in my shopping bag.

Despite the high quality beans and machines used, the price of a coffee and beans is kept affordable at AUD3.50 and AUD10.00 per 250 grams respectively compared to other joints like St Ali. If you're in South Melbourne Market, Padre is an excellent stop for a proper cup of java.
