A bit like England's World Cup campaign, London's summer can sometime be laughable, dismal, hopeless (insert adjective of your choice here). However, on occasion, it can really shine. And when it does, the last place you want to be is indoors.
Such glorious weather, when it happens, creates the perfect opportunity to take some of those things you love doing indoors, outdoors – like watching a movie.
So take note: for 11 days starting 29 July, Somerset House, together with Film4, will be
hosting a range of movies in its grand Edmond J. Safra courtyard, from special previews to cult classics.
Movies include Knight and Day, Manhattan, Paths of Glory, Mulholland Drive, Black Narcissus, Paths of Glory, and a selection of BAFTA winning shorts. Double bills include Kill Bill Vol I with Enter the Dragon, and Let the Right One In with The Lost Boys.
And there's a lot more besides the screenings – doors open at 6.30pm with entertainment provided by DJs from 7.30pm. Food and drink is available on site, though you're welcome to take your own (however, no glass or cans are allowed in the courtyard – plastic containers are OK). Films begin at 9.30pm.
For all you movie buffs, be sure to check out the
Behind the Screen events, too. A host of filmmakers provide some unique insights into the world of movies, with evenings dedicated to, for example, satirical cinema and "the immortal appeal of the vampire". Behind the Screen events take place in the Screening Room, starting at 7pm.
There's no seating for the movies, so arrive early to grab a space and spread a blanket. Rain or shine, the projector will run.
